Sickos

Everyone around us seem to be getting sick. Friends from church. My brother, who was visiting yesterday, has contracted some kind of yuck.

And this is the time of year when everyone seems to catch something... it's almost spring, the sun is peeking... people are getting stir crazy and want to be out, want it to be spring... so they go out without their hat and scarf and voila! They've caught some crud or another.

Folks at Mr.W's office all come to work sick. I'll never understand that. I told him to use lysol on all his work surfaces, doorknobs on common entries/exits, even the bathroom fixtures, and bring some hand sanitizer.

We have been fortunate--blessed--to not contract any viruses of any kind. And I'm laying low, too... keeping away from the infectors as much as possible, and taking a zinc supplement every day. Well, I take that anyway--it's good for diabetics. But it's also good for your immune system. Hooray!

So to those of you who are sick: stay home, get some rest, have a hot cup of tea or soup or whatever it is that makes you feel warm and loved.

And don't come anywhere near me until you're well. K?

My husband used to work at the Hotel Utica, and the chefs came to work, high fevers and strep throats. You'd think the bosses would fire folks like that... we went to the grocery store and a mom was pushing a cart with two little girls who looked deathly ill. The mom walked and kept saying, "Just a little longer." Yuk.

I'm staying home for now!

Ugh! That's a typhoid mary situation there. Sick chef going to work and preparing everyone's food.

It's just wrong. Ugh.

When I was in Ethiopia I stayed at the Hilton in Addis Ababa. Everyone who went... for at least 2 years... came back with giardia (including myself). Well for a long time I figured it was due to bad food choices (uncooked veg, contaminated water... I blamed my case on ice cream), but one of my colleagues toured the hotel and discovered someone on the kitchen staff was cross-contaminating the food. So it WAS due to food, but via a person who wasn't practicing good methods.

You just never know, do you?
