Nothing Exciting in my Humble Kitchen

It's been a while since my last blog post. I haven't really had any exciting kitchen experiments to report and, well, I'll admit, I've been lazy.

I got some kind of flu, then it was my birthday, through which I had to suffer as people wished me well at a nearby Lebanese restaurant--which I must say was no match for Lawrence's on Buford Highway in Atlanta. Now THAT is an excellent Lebanese restaurant, for lunch or dinner!

I really hate my birthday coming around--it just reminds me that we don't have kids yet even though trying, and that's just depressing. I'd prefer to skip it altogether, but people always end up remembering.

I did get a good book, though, from my wonderful husband. It's called The Soul of a New Cuisine: A Discovery of the Foods and Flavors of Africa by Marcus Samuelsson. It's brilliant, with a great many lovely pictures and recipes that bring African flavor into everyday foods. Of course there are traditional recipes as well--including injera! I feel another try coming soon...

I never planned to cook the Resurrection Sunday meal--but at the last minute I caved in. The Saturday before Easter was spent grocery shopping and prepping make-ahead dishes. I made an apricot-glazed ham, curried sweet potato salad, quinoa with carrots, zucchini and currants, and my very first try at a leg of lamb--roasted according to Julia Child's famous recipe. It was superb! I invited two couples--my brother and his wife and a family friend, Madeline, and her wonderful husband, Jerry. It was a lovely evening of food and fellowship.

Tonight the hubby and I are heading to a nearby Chinese buffet--sad, I know. But this particular buffet is better than others I've gone to for several reasons: it doesn't smell like fish when you walk in, the sushi is fresh and behind a counter, there is a mongolian bar-b-que area included, the variety of food is excellent, and it costs only about $10 per person. Works for me on a cold, rainy spring Friday evening!

Until next time,
Mrs. W
